As well as revamping their website, The Brian Jacket Letdown have also released the first in what will hopefully be a long series of podcasts. This one features all manner of Brazilian wax, with obscure Samba and psychedelic rock a-plenty.

Au Revoir Simone

Au Revoir Simone

Just a quick nod to Au Revoir Simone, a trio of Brooklyn girls who make lovely songs with old keyboards. The site has an MP3 download of “Backyards Of Our Neighbours” and you can hear more songs on their Myspace page. (I never thought I’d post a link to Myspace, as the whole experience just makes me feel old and befuddled. Still, that’s my problem, not yours. Or theirs.)

Their 2nd album, The Bird of Music is released on February 19th in Europe and the UK.

3 Day novel contest results

January 15, 2007

Results are in for the 2006 International 3 Day Novel Contest and… I didn’t win. My entry - Idolatry - was shortlisted in the final 20, but missed out on the big one.

As is customary on these occasions, I’d like to make the usual noises about what an honour it was to take part, thank the judges for their nod and offer my congratulations to the overall winner, Brendon McLeod.

The Life of Larry

January 13, 2007

I’ve been watching quite a lot of Family Guy at the moment and apart from grumbling that they use too many songs, I have to say that I think series creator Seth McFarlane is a disgustingly talented individual.

While trawling the internet, I discovered someone had posted his student film The Life of Larry on to gorillamask. It’s a kind of prototype Family Guy but drawn in a very different style. The fact that McFarlane himself introduces the animation suggests that he ran out of time and money, but it’s worth a look if you’re interested in the beginnings of Family Guy (and, by extension, eerily similar follow-up American Dad!).
